Brief Introduction:

       There had a family of wolves in cave, the small wolf was tired of food his mother cook like lamburger, Sloopy Dose, Chocolate Moose, etc. He wants to eat a "boy." Therefore, he thought about an  idea. On day, he cried out "BOY!" Then his parents were happy and rushed out, tried to caught the "boy," however, they could not found any, the food mother cooked was ruined, so they ate snack that night. The next day, the same situation, also snack for dinner. One day, his parents heard about his telephone conversation, he was show off his trick and going to keep playing this trick. His parents were angry, and decided to ignore him. However, the real "boy" appeared, even sitting in their living room, but this time, father and mother wolf would not trust him anymore. 

Setting:
- Narrative Point of View: Omniscient Narrator
- Plot: Dramatic Plot
(Setting: There was a wolves family, and the boy was really tired of his mother's cook.The wolf boy thought about a idea.
Conflict: The wolf boy cried out "boy!" Then parents wolves was so happy and rushed out for found "the boy," but could not found him, and ruined the food mother cooked.
Rising Action: Day after day, the same situation keep happened. One day, the father heard about the wolf boy's telephone conversation, find that all of "boy!" are a trick, they decided ignore him.
Climax: The "real boy" came, but parents ignored him.
Denouement: The wold boy became clever, and did not object his mother's cook.)
- Conflict: Protagonist against Self (The wold boy becoming clever, because he found that how sad his parents ignored him.)

Reflection:
       The cover picture use a lot of square, and use those square to make words, which looks like video game. It is the first point attract me. Second point is the typesetting, it is really cute to use picture in sentences.

       In fact, I don't believe kid will be so clever after the ignore form their parents. But it is a good story to teach children not to lie.  

Strega Nona

Brief Introduction:

       Strega Nona means "Grandma Witch." She lives in a town in Calabria. She can cured many illness like headache, and she can help girl who want a husband, etc. She is old, so she hired a boy, named Big Anthony, to helps her to wash floor, dishes, clean the house, etc. One day, Strega Nona sang to a pasta pot, and the pot appeared lots of pasta, until she thought it is enough, she kissed the pot and the pot stop producing. The process was saw by Big Anthony, except the kiss part. Another day, Nona was going out for a few days, Big Anthony looked after the house, and she told Anthony do not touch the pot, then went away. Anthony did not listened to Nona, he told everyone that he can  make pasta by singing, so he did it. However, he did not know that he must to kiss the pot, or the pot will not stop producing pasta. Therefore, the pasta went all over the town, until Nona came back, she kissed the pot, and told Anthony to ate all of the pasta. Anthony would not make the mistake again. 

Setting:

(Setting: In a town in Calabria, there had old witch called Strega Nona, she can cured any kind of illness, even can helped people get what they want.

Conflict: She hired a boy called Big Anthony to helped her with house work.

Rising Action: One day she used a pasta pot to producing pasta by singing, and kissing. The process was watched by Big Anthony, except kissing to stop part.

Climax: Another day, Strega Nona went out for a few days, and told Anthony do not touch the pot. However, Anthony did not heard Nona's reminder, he told everyone to came and saw how he producing pasta by singing. He did not know how to stop, so the pasta went all over the town.

Denouement: Nona came back, and kissed the pot to stop producing, then called Anthony to ate up all of the pasta in town.

- Conflict: Protagonist against Another (Anthony did not know the whole process, and touching the pot without caring about Nona's notice, so get into trouble. )

- Theme: "Do not do something that do not understand  rashly, or it will make someone get into trouble."

- Style: Exposition and Dialogue

- Tone: Humor and Didacticism 

Reflection:

       This story is an old story, and I never heard of this story. I like the ending part, Nona told Anthony to eat all pasta up, however, the pasta is all over the town. The exaggeration make me smile. Anthony ate all pasta up finally, the Nona slept well in house, the contraction is funny.

The way Nona taught Anthony a lesson is great, it taught him the responsibility. Nowadays, there are many kids make troubles, and their parents came out to apologize, it is not a good way to treat children, it is a kind of spoil, when the day the kid grow up, they will becoming irresponsible.  I believe that Nona already knew Anthony will not heard her notice, but she still trust him to looked after house, it is an opportunity to teach a kid. I can see how wise Nona is from here. 

Snow White In New York

Brief Introduction:

       There was a poor little girl called Snow White, she lived in New York, her mother was dead, and her father got merry again. Her stepmother was a classiest dame in New York, she also had a secret status that she was a Queen of Underworld. 

       One day, the stepmother heard somebody said, "Snow White the Belle of New York City." She was jealous about it, and called her guard to kill Snow White. However, the guard is soft-hearted, he only left Snow White on the street but not killed her. Snow White met seven jazz-men, and became a singer, everyone said that she can be a star. The stepmother jealous again, and tried to kill her in a party by a poison cherry which put in the wine. Then, Snow White passed away, everyone were sad.  Miraculously, she revived when a reporter came, and they lived happy ever after. 

Setting:

- Plot: Dramatic Plot 

(Setting: Snow White's father got marry again.

Conflict: The stepmother was jealous about Snow White's reputation, and send her guard to kill her.

Rising Action: The guard released her, and she met seven jazz-men, then became a singer, lots of people said she might be a star.

Climax: The stepmother tried to kill her in a party by a cherry which put in wine, and everyone thought Snow White was dead. 

Denouement: Snow White revived after a reporter came, and the poison cherry which in her throat was gone. She lived happy ever after with the reporter. )

- Conflict: Protagonist against Another (A jealous person like the stepmother will never be successful and own happiness.)

- Theme: "Don't tried to hurt somebody only because of personal feeling, it will never  satisfied a person."

- Style: Exposition and Dialoge (see the picture below)

- Tone: Irony (The original Snow White story, Snow White only waited for somebody to save her, and the prince fell in love with Snow White because of her appearance (they never met.). However, in this book, it is different. Snow White in NY had a job, she was a singer, and the reporter, her prince, was attracted by not only her appearance, but also her sweet voice.)

Reflection:

       The first thing of this book which caught my eye is the name of this book. The story is a little same as original one, like stepmother, her dead, and a man came to make her alive. However, the scene, the personality and methods are somehow different. I like this story. Snow White in NY was not a weak person, she used her ability to made her live, she sang, and attract people's attention, including her future happiness. So we can do it too! No matter how hard we born, we can still use our ability to win our own life. 

       The second thing attract me is the drawing. We can see that the pictures has contraction. The stepmother is darker, and Snow White is lighter like an angel. The people around them also have different face, the left part, all of the them are smiling; however, the right side, they look angry.

Then, the illustrator use a lot of lines to show the busy city.

Next, the light shows holy and the love form others of Snow White, even she is died, she is still like an angel.

I really like this skill of illustration.

We're Going on a Bear Hunt

Brief Introduction:

       A family was going on a bear hunt, and they did not afraid any challenge. On the way to bear hunting, they faced a lot of situations like long grass, a river, mud, a forest, a snowstorm and a cave. After they went through all of worse experience, they finally found a bear, but the bear was so horrible that they rushed back to home immediately, however, the bear followed them on the way. They went back to home, and shut the door, hid in bed fearfully. The bear cannot got in, and went back sadly.

Setting:

- Narrative Point of View: First-Person Narrator 

- Plot: Dramatic Plot 

(Setting: They were going to bear hunting, and without afraid.

Conflict: They faced some challenges, like long grass, a river, mud, a forest and a snowstorm.

Rising action: They found a cave, and got into it slowly.

Climax: They found a bear standing in front of them. 

Denouement: They felt afraid and went through those challenges again, rushed back to home, and hid in the bed. The bear felt upset and went away.)
- Conflict: The Protagonist against Self and Nature (1. Even they need to went through so many challenges, they still not gave up. 2. There are many situations in the wild, like grass, river, mud, etc. )
- Theme: "Human being should not look down on the Nature, we have to respect it."
- Tone: Humorous (The onomatopoeia in this book will make readers smile. For example, Swishy Swashy! Splash Splosh!, etc.)

Reflection:

       I like this book's illustration, especially on human and animal's face, Helen Oxenbury use simple line to draw out the emotion of them. For example, the picture upon the reflection part, it is the part which they found a cave, and got into it slowly. Their face are full of uncertain, maybe there will appear something without expectation. And another picture below,

it shows that they are really afraid of bear, however, look the baby daughter, she looks not afraid but enjoy, even played with a Teddy bear, the reflection between adult/ bigger children and baby is totally different, it is cute. The most classic is next picture. 

The bear only showed its back, but we can see how upset it was. The illustrator use dim color and dejected bear to show its emotion, I like this illustration most.

       Second, the story teller use a lot of  onomatopoeia to describe the sound of nature, readers can experience both story and sound at one time when reading it, increasing the emotion when reading. 

Daddy's Roommate

Book: Daddy's Roommate

Brief Introduction: 

       This is a Germany children's book, which talks about the homosexual. In this book, there are 4 characters: the boy, Mom, Dad and Frank. Dad and mom divorced, and Dad moves with Frank, Frank is Dad's partner. Then the author uses Mom describing the homosexual to the boy, and promotes that homosexual has no different from heterosexual, even the gender is different, however, the love is the same. 

Setting:

- Narrative Point of View:  First-Person Narrator (The boy)

- Plot: journey (The boy describes the experience that  happened in his own life.)

- Conflict: Protagonist against Society ("Homosexual" has been a sensitive issue for a long time, especially in children's education. However, the author uses a right direction to lead not only children but also adult nowadays to treat them equally.) 

- Theme: "Homosexuality is just another type of love, but love is only way to achieve happiness."

- Style: Sentences (pictures)

- Tone: Didacticism (The author tries to use boy's tone to describes that homosexual has no different from heterosexual, and I think has a little sense of "Even the children knows, how can you those adult do not understand? ")

       "Homosexual issue" has been a sensitive issue for a long time, it is not about the right or wrong, but the cognitive. I remember there was a arguing about "Is homosexual issue put into the teaching material of fifth grade's elementary student positive or negative?" Not surprising, there still  lots of people including parents, teachers or students are not agree, even has a activity on Facebook which is all opposition. In fact, it is because the atmosphere in Taiwan, which is more traditional, some kinds of different from West Country.

       When I was in elementary school, the "gay," this word showed up first time in my life. At that time, I think it is strange, but not have special feeling about it yet. Then I was a junior high school student, I found there have a homosexuality which is my best friend. I felt uncomfortable, but I didn't want to lose this friend, so even I didn't agree with homosexual, I was still his best friend. He kept telling me that how upset that he found out the truth, and the feeling of his heart, I ignored it, because I don't understand it, and totally disagree with it that I couldn't have any "agree voice" in my mind. 

       Now I am a university student, I change my thought about it. As I found that if I leave the "homosexual" behind, my friend is still my friend, the interesting, funny guy, which is more tender than other boys. Moreover, I understand that the period of time when a homosexuality admits him/herself as a "homosexuality," how difficult they felt. He or she will afraid to telling their parents, because their parents may feel upset even angry about it; They are afraid of telling the truth to their friends, since some opponent will leave them, then he or she loses a friend. Homosexuality is human being as we. We are social animals, so do them. Homosexual will not change their personality, if you feel some different between you and your friend, that must be your change. 

       The atmosphere nowadays about "Homosexual" still has a long way to go, I believe someday, I believe someday, this kind of children literature will be open everywhere, and every people will treat them equally. 

Tar Beach

Book: Tar Beach

Author: Faith Ringgold

Brief Introduction:

       In this book, there have 6 characters: Daddy, Mommy, Mr. & Mrs. Honey, Be Be and Cassie.

Cassie wanna go wherever she wants, one night the dream come true on their roof, she is flying upon the city, and see the George Washington  Bridge, the union building, the ice cream factory. All of the building she see are what she wants, but she is not a greedy girl, she just want her family become wealthier, that her mom will not cry, can sleep a little late like Mrs. Honey, her dad can find a stable job, they can have dessert after dinner.

Setting:

- Narrative Point of View: First-Person Narrator (Cassie)

- Plot: flashback (At the first page, she mention on that she cannot forget the day she flied upon the George Washington Bridge, and there have stars around her. Then she began to say why she is flying, how, and when.)

- Conflict: Protagonist against Society (In this book, there mention on that the labor union, but her dad cannot be a member of  union, she said it is because grandpa is not a member of it, in fact, it is because they are African Americans. It is a kind of racial problem, caused her dad cannot find a stable job, or maybe not enough pay. )

- Theme: "Do not have different racial identify, and hope the government can pay attention on this kind of problem and improve it."

- Style: Exposition and Dialogue (picture)

- Tone: Sentimentalism (After read this book, I feel sad for the Cassie. She is always stand in her parents' shoes, understanding the situation of them, and wants to improve it. However, the real situation can't change. How can a kind girl limited by the racial problem? )

Reflection:

       After reading this book, I feel so proud also sad for the Cassie, she is so strong, and imitate. From the beginning of the  story to the end, she never said one thing about "me" but "Mommy" "Daddy" and "Be-Be." She stand in other's shoes, never ask her parents for something she want, and she also takes a great care of her brother, what a good child. How can a nice girl live under the racial problem in America? (The Africa American and Native American cannot be a member of union, so her father's job is not stable, and maybe the pay is not enough.) This book teaches children that in this world, there have different races of people, sometimes their treatment is a little different from them, and they need to treasure what they own, do best to treat others equally. 

       In addition, about this book, first, I like the part which put at the back of front cover, there have a unit which is describes the meaning of union, and put some questions to ask children, make them think and have some reflection, instead of read through it as a simple story.  

What is union..., etc.

       Second, below every page, there have lines which are decorated by colorful quilts. It is the specialty which author enjoy to use, which warms me, feels exotic.

       In conclusion, it teaches children there have other races of people in the world, requires them to treat other different races people equally. They are not poor, but government treats them unequally. Moreover, it teaches children need to stand in other's shoes, do not always ask parents give everything they want, and be kind children like Cassie.

Rosie's Walk

Brief Introduction:

       One day, a hen, Rosie, was taking a walk in the farm. There was is a fox following her, Rosie walked across the yard, walked around the pond, walked over the haystack, etc. Finally, she went back home safely and in time for dinner. However, how was the fox? That is just what the story talking about.

Setting:

- Narrative Point of View: Omniscient Narrator

- Plot: Episodic Plot 

(There have 6 parts in this story. 

 1. Rosie walked across the yard, the fox bumped into a rake.

 2. Rosie walked around the pond, the fox fell into the pond. 

 3. Rosie walked over the haystack, the fox was buried into haystack.

 4. Rosie walked past the mill, the fox was hit by the flour.

 5. Rosie walked through the fence, the fox was fell into a cart.

 6. Rosie walked under the beehives, the fox was on the cart, and the cart was moving, than bumped into the beehives, all of the bee was catching the fox. 

 Then Rosie went back home safely and in time for dinner.)

- Conflict: Protagonist against Another (The fox tried to catch Rosie, but Rosie just wanna took a walk.)

- Theme: "Do not try to get a thing as a ill-wisher, or you will get troubles."

- Style: Sentences (look at the pictures. The whole book's style is like these.)

-Tone: Humor (This book use humorous pictures to describe the misfortunes that the fox met.)

 Reflection:

       I enjoy reading this book, because it is attracting me,  I am lazy to see so many words after whole day long classes, so I choose to read this book first. The author use pictures to show how the animals' behaviors,  instead of a lot of words. I believe children will enjoy this book as well as me.  

         First, the thing which catches my eye in this book is the painting. The unconcerned expression of Rosie the hen, and from the fox's ambitious expression when he was hidden for catching Rosie, to the frustrated face of fox, the painter use the simple lines and colorful color to paint, those are vivid. 

       Second, the simple words. The author keep using words which can train children's the sense of space, for example, across, around, over, under, etc. Children can understand those words with pictures, and let them know the space. 

       The author only uses few words but a lot of pictures to show this story. However, human beings are visual type animals, we can easily understand the story even without words. It relaxes me after a whole day long classes, I am quite enjoy in it. 

I Will Never Not Ever Eat a Tomato

Brief Introduction:

       In this book, there have 2 main characters: Charlie, the brother, and Lola, the younger sister. Lola is a picky eater, she doesn't like eat peas, carrots, potatoes, etc. especially hates tomatoes. Charlie wants to make his sister eat foods that she doesn't like, so he use the "imagination" to encourage Lola to eat. At last, unexpectedly, Lora tells his brother give her the tomatoes, and she eats it.

Setting:

- Narrative Point View: First-Person Narrator (Charlie)

- Plot: Dramatic Plot 

(Setting: Lola is a picky eater, sometimes it is hard for their parents to prepare food for her.

Conflict: Lola is too picky that almost everything she doesn't eat. Charlie want let her eat foods she doesn't like.

Rising action: Charlie keeps using imagination to encourage, to lead  Lola to eat.

Climax: Lola tells Charlie passes the tomatoes to her.

Denouement: Lola finally eats what she hatest, tomatoes, and Charlie still cannot believe it.)

- Conflict: Protagonist against Another (Charlie tells Lola to eat tomatoes and other foods she doesn't like.)

- Theme: "Every children are teachable, but they need a suitable way to be educated."

- Tone: didacticism

Reflection:

       I had been reading this book's Chinese version from my cousin. My aunt bought this book for my cousin because he also hate tomatoes, he never eat that, so she want my cousin read it, and educated, than eat tomatoes, but it seems have not success.
       I really enjoy reading this book. First of all, because there is full of child's imagination, for intense, the carrots are not carrots, but the orange Twiglets (kind of cookie which shape is stripe.) form Jupiter; The green peas are rain drops from Greenland, etc. Secondly, those words have special arrangement, for example, the carrots part , which arranges the words like floating in the outer space;

and the mashed potato part, which builds like a mountain.

Those images catch not only children, but also adults' eyes. 

       It is really a cute book. Childlike imagination always surprised me, in my eyes, peas are peas, never be rain drops, mashed potatoes are mashed potatoes, never be cloud fluff, because I am an adult. Well, Even my cousin still doesn't want to eat tomatoes, but I believe this book will be effective to some little picky eater.
